The ’50s saw the dashing Royal Navy commander and his wife grow their family, with the arrival of Princess Anne in 1950, following Prince Charles two years earlier. But life changed with the death of King George VI. At the Coronation in 1953, Philip swore to be his wife’s ‘liege man of life and limb’

Family matters

Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip’s first son Charles was born on 14 November 1948. His sister Anne was welcomed into the world on 15 August 1950. Their second son Andrew was born on 19 February 1960, followed by their youngest child Edward on 10 March 1964.
