My Saturday Danwalker

The BBC Breakfast and Olympics presenter, 44, on barely sleeping, finding trousers to fit when you’re 6ft 6in and walking his famous dog

-

6.30am I get up just after 3am in the week, so try to stay in bed, but I can’t help myself. I’m a Christian so I read my Bible, then go on the indoor cycle or do a HIIT session online. 8am I have toast and scrambled eggs – and two cups of Yorkshire tea a day. Louise [Minchin from BBC Breakfast] always tells me off because I have it too milky. I dress down in tracksuit pants at the weekend. I’m 6ft 6in so tend to go to 2tall.com or a Dutch company called Girav. I like Nike or Hoka trainers. 9am My youngest Joe, 10, has violin lessons in the morning and orchestra in the afternoon. They’re all musical – Jessica, 12, plays the flute and Susie, 14, plays the piano. My wife Sarah [a school administrator] is very musically gifted too. 11am I walk Winnie, our cockapoo, to Endcliffe Park and say hello to Tony Foulds. He’s 84 and has been looking after a war memorial there – I helped get a fly-past for him. People always go, ‘Oh, there’s Winnie off the telly’ because she was a regular on Football Focus when I was filming from home.

1pm Lunch might be some barbecue leftovers. This is new territory for me. My Saturdays haven’t been my own for 20 years as I was on Football Focus [Dan left the show in May]. 2pm The girls go to Verve, a singing and dancing club in Sheffield. My wife and I might garden or I’ll play golf. I’m a member of Hallamshire Golf Club and am now a scratch golfer. But with the Olympics starting I’ll be kept busy as I am hosting a show every day with Sam Quek. 5.15pm I’ll go and pick the kids up. I’m trying to learn Spanish so I’ll do a Rosetta Stone lesson en route.6pm We get a takeaway curry from Prithi Raj. We’ll have chicken tikka rogan josh and I love saag paneer too. I hardly drink, I occasionally have a glass of red. 8pm We like a film night with the kids. We’ve worked our way through the Marvel and Star Wars films. During lockdown we put an Epson projector in our cellar, so popcorn and Minstrels and you’re off. 10.30pm I watch Match of the Day and the news. I go to bed about midnight – even though I’m up early. I’ve always been someone who hardly sleeps at all.

Dan Walker is co-presenting coverage of the Olympics every day on BBC One, 5am-9am, starting today
