... and to drink

Hamish Anderson picks three hot-weather hits

Just as John’s dishes are about ease and fun, when the sun is shining we err towards styles of wine that are immediate and uncomplicated. Here are three bottles that deliver instant and delicious drinking.

FINEST STELLENBOSCH CHENIN BLANC 2020, South Africa, 13.5%, £7.50, Tesco

South Africa’s signature white grape comes in many guises; this is on the bright, mouthwatering end of the spectrum. Brilliantly refreshing on a warm day, it sits beautifully alongside the smoky tuna.

BEAUJOLAISVILLAGES ‘COMBE AUX JACQUES’ 2020, Louis Jadot, France, 13.5%, £10, down to £8 until 8 Sept, Asda

Beaujolais is the ultimate red for heat, and this one’s a stunner. It brims with pure, juicy just-picked fruit – blackberry and loganberries – with some background spice. Serve cool.

THE ENGLISH LADY 2 0 1 9 , Hattingley Valley, England, 11.5%, £19, hattingley

Nominally a sparkling red, I’d approach this as you would rosé. Chill (several bottles if you have friends; one won’t last long) and enjoy redcurrants, dark cherries and smoke. A fine aperitif that will also pair with the chicken.
