My Saturday

Newsreader and new Mastermind host Clive Myrie on his love of yoga, opera and fizz

-

5.30am I’m an early waker, not an early riser. It takes me a good hour and a half to get myself together. I put on Radio 3 for Record Review with Andrew Mcgregor. 9am I have muesli and fruit juice. I used to be a huge fry-up man on the weekend, but my wife Catherine [a furniture restorer] has convinced me that’s not the way to go. 9.30am I’ve started doing yoga on YouTube – it’s made me so much more relaxed. Then I change into jeans – I like Albam, a British firm that does a lot of streetwear. 10.30am I might be preparing to go to work so would be getting across the news. Or if I’m lucky I go to the Estorick Collection with my wife. It’s a fantastic Georgian town house near me in Islington with Italian pre-war and modernist art and a great café. 1pm If we’re in town we have lunch at the Royal Academy or Tate. I try to have quiche and something leafy to allow me to indulge of an evening. 2.30pm At home I might do a bit of writing, prepping for any upcoming work trip. We listen to Gilles Peterson on Radio 6. I’ve currently been filming Mastermind.

We’ve done 28 shows so far in six days in Belfast. I watched Mastermind as a kid growing up, so the idea that I’m actually hosting it is mad. 7pm We have Radio 3’s Opera on 3 on. I played violin when I was a kid in the local youth orchestra [he grew up in Bolton], so I’ve always loved classical music. I’m a traditionalist and like Verdi, Mozart, Donizetti and Rossini. If I’m cooking it’s usually a West Indian dish – rice and peas, chicken or fish. I got that from growing up [Clive’s parents are Jamaican]. If Catherine’s cooking it’s more adventurous, like sea bass encrusted in salt crystals. If we’re feeling naughty, we’ll break open a bottle of champagne. I love bubbles. 9.30pm I do the washing-up. Then we sometimes gorge on a box set – Call My Agent and Line of Duty have been brilliant. We watched Rory Stewart’s documentary, Afghanistan: The Great Game [on Youtube]. It’s a good primer for anyone who wants to know what the hell’s going on there. 11.30pm My clubbing years are over, but Dingwalls in Camden used to have a funk-soul night, which was a favourite haunt.

(Clive iplayer) Myrie will begin as host of Mastermind on Monday, at 7.30pm on BBC Two and
