... and to drink

Susy Atkins selects the perfect drinking partners

Roast chicken needs a fairly ripe, rich white. For Georgie’s tempting recipe, I suggest a premium Australian chardonnay. Or go for a light, juicy red, not the full-bodied, tannic sort. Chill a golden Spanish pudding wine to star with that glorious ice cream.

HILL-SMITH ESTATE CHARDONNAY 2020, Eden Valley, Australia, 13.5 per cent, Waitrose, £11.99

Nicely balanced, rounded with plenty of juicy ripe peach, citrus and pineapple and a fresh streak running through it.

M&S CLASSICS NO 35 BEAUJOLAIS-VILLAGES 2020, France, 14 per cent, Marks & Spencer, £8

This is full of cassis and blackberry but it’s elegant and refreshing, not the least bit heavy. It will match the chicken and broccoli, not overpower them.

WINEMAKER’S SELECTION VINA ARAYA MOSCATEL DE VALENCIA NV, Spain, 15 per cent, Sainsbury’s, £5.35

A great value dessert wine, honeyed, with apricot and orange flavours. Chill it well and pour into small glasses as a lovely treat with the ice cream.
