Grimsby back in big league
Grimsby Town have returned to the Football League after a six-year absence by beating Forest Green Rovers 3-1 at Wembley in the National League play-off final.
Omar Bogle opened the scoring three minutes before half-time when he headed home a free-kick from deep. The striker bagged another less than a minute later with a poacher’s effort, capitalising on a spilt free-kick to extend Grimsby’s advantage.
Keanu Marsh-Brown clawed one back for Rovers with a blistering shot from distance. His side turned the screws and brought on Jon Parkin, the veteran former Stoke City forward, as they took the game to the Mariners.
But Rovers left themselves open as they hunted down the equaliser. With men committed upfield, they paid the price as Grimsby broke on the counter and Nathan Arnold rounded namesake Steve Arnold in the Rovers goal to seal victory in front of 17,198 fans.
