The Gottardino trains will run from August 2 to November 27, daily except Mondays, from Flüelen to Biasca or in the reverse direction. A one-hour tour of the tunnel is included. Tickets from £86 per person (£71 with Swiss Travel Pass), available from sbb.ch/ticketshop or the Swiss Travel Centre (020 7420 4900; stc.co.uk).

The Swiss Museum of Transport (0041 370 44 44; verkehrshaus.ch/en) is hosting a special exhibition about the Gotthard Base Tunnel until October 23. It features a cross-section of the tunnel, a tunnelboring machine, a large granite diorama of the Gotthard massif and a host of films and photographs featuring the tunnels.
