Cruise

Enchanting Danube

Rating 9/10

The seven-night cruise from Budapest to Passau runs from April to midNovember, with two cruises accompanied by Elisabeth von Trapp in 2016 departing on July 24 and July 31. The line also offers Connoisseur and Monarch Collection sailings which incorporate food and other music themes. A ratio of around one member of staff to three passengers makes for super-friendly, attentive service and a relaxed atmosphere.

The Ship 9/10

River Beatrice is individually designed and décor is opulent, from the vast glass chandelier in the entrance to reproduction furniture and plush fabrics. Cosy corners in which to relax include the lounge, library and the sun deck. (NB the exuberant décor may not suit all).

Itinerary 10/10

Sailings in both directions. Stops include Bratislava, Vienna, Dürnstein, for walks up to a ruined castle or wine tasting and an optional Wachau valley cycle ride, Melk and its ornate baroque abbey, Linz, with optional Salzburg coach tour, and Passau, with a recital on the world’s biggest cathedral organ.

Cabins 8/10

The 78 cabins (including 15 suites) feature comfy Savoir beds from England, fluffy duvets and large

Food and drink 9/10

All food and drinks included, along with good wines at meals; free seating. Buffet for lunch, served dinner with choice of courses. More could be made of the Danube’s rich cake heritage.

Facilities and entertainment 9/10

Small, cosy library with computers; bar; small gym; a massage room; guest self-service laundry and lift. Bikes available for independent shore excursions. Daily fitness sessions and entertainment including recitals and talks.

Excursions 9/10

Choice at each destination, most included in price. For the daily, main tour passengers are divided into three or four groups, with one “gentle walking” option. Plus “do as the locals do” alternative featuring, for example, local markets. Some excursions – such as private concert in Vienna and helicopter rides – cost more.

Value for money 9/10

The relatively high price brings exceptional service – and includes private transfer to and from British airports and all gratuities.
