Travelling life
Eleanor Tomlinson Actress
How often do you travel?
I spend about six months working on Poldark, which involves going to Cornwall and Bristol. I love going to see my brother in Paris, or seeing family in Yorkshire.
Favourite filming location?
I have been to Cape Town twice. I remember staying in the Mount Nelson Hotel, which was amazing. Death Comes to Pemberley was filmed all over Derbyshire and Yorkshire. We were at Chatsworth House, Harewood House and Castle Howard among other locations. For Poldark, we film all over Cornwall.
Favourite part of Yorkshire?
I grew up in Beverley, which is a lovely old market town. Whitby and Scarborough are fabulous seaside towns.
What do you need for a perfect holiday?
I love both sun and snow holidays. I have to be very careful to avoid sunburn when somewhere very hot. I love going on city tours with a guide to see nontouristy areas.
Your earliest memory of travelling abroad?
Disneyland in Florida when I was six or seven. I also remember going to Prague to film The Illusionist when I was 12.
Your most adventurous travel experience?
After filming the first season of Poldark, I went with the cast on a trip to Iceland. We started off in Reykjavik and then went into the mountains and swam in naturally heated pools.
Most remote place visited?
My family found a cottage to rent to the north of the Lake District which was so far off the beaten track.
Your most relaxing destination?
I went to the Dominican Republic with my brother a few years ago to get some chill-out time and some sun.
Best holiday ever?
I love Paris. I’d recommend going to Marché aux Puces de St-Ouen, which is an enormous flea market full of hidden treasures. Eugène Ionesco’s La Cantatrice Chauve at Théâtre de la Huchette has been running since the Fifties. Canal St Martin is a great place to sit by the water.
Favourite holiday destination?
Cape Town. I’d love to revisit at some point.
Favourite hotel?
The Great Southern in Killarney in Ireland, which I went to during a family trip, was great. When I was 16 and working on Alice in Wonderland, I stayed in The Milestone in Kensington, which was pretty fabulous.
Best piece of travel advice?
Relax, ensure you are organised, have your tickets to hand, and have a good book or something to watch on your tablet or iPad.
Best beauty tip when flying?
Look after your skin by making sure you drink lots of water and take a nice moisturiser with you.
Your one travel essential?
My phone, as I read scripts on it, and notebooks, in which I write down thoughts about work.
What do you hate about holidays?
They end far too quickly.
Where next?
I would love to go to the Maldives and to InterRail for a month in Europe. And I still have plenty of England and Ireland to explore. Eleanor Tomlinson is an ambassador for Trainline’s Lintenair campaign. For more information, see lintenair.com.
