The four-day trek to Peru’s mountain citadel, Machu Picchu, requires a permit, which are restricted to 500 per day for hikers and accompanying guides and crew. Next year’s permits were released in early October this year and the most popular period for walking the trail is May to August. Specialist operators include the cost of a permit in their tours, around $190 (£144), and advise booking at least six months ahead of travel for a reasonable choice of availability.
