TRANSCONTINENTAL RAILROAD
For lovers of cross-continental train journeys, all eyes will be on Utah this year as the state marks the 150th anniversary of the moment when the United States of America became truly united with the completion of a system of railroads connecting east with west, reducing a journey that had taken weeks to one of just a few days. Utah was the place of the “Last Spike” – a ceremony that marked the successful linking of the Central Pacific and Union Pacific railroads – and from that moment on (May 10 1869) – the Californian dream became much more real.
