As noted above, when it comes to long-dis­tance train jour­neys, Aus­tralia of­fers plenty of op­por­tu­ni­ties. There’s east to west (In­dian Pa­cific) and north to south (the Ghan). They are pop­u­lar too: some­times there are so many car­riages that the trains are more than half a mile long. Which is why, as of later this year, there will be a third epic rail ad­ven­ture on of­fer: the Great South­ern, which will link Bris­bane on the Sun­shine Coast with the south­ern city of Ade­laide (and the nearby vine­yards of the cel­e­brated Barossa Val­ley).
