3. FABRICA DO CHOCOLATE, PORTUGAL

Willy Wonka himself would approve of this whimsical hotel-museum dedicated to all things sweet. The decor alone is enough to give you a sugar rush: chocolate paint dripping from the ceiling, lollipop-shaped doors – even “golden ticket” headboards. Enjoy chocolate facials, a museum exhibition on cocoa (€8), deliciously scented toiletries and a chocolate fountain at breakfast.

5. ROSAS & XOCOLATE, MEXICO

A chocolate wonderland housed in a 19th-century colonial mansion on the Yucatan peninsula.

This boutique hotel is best known for its “xocolatherapies”, ranging from a warm chocolate facial to a rose oil foot massage where the recipient enjoys a scoop of chocolate ice cream; it’s nothing but the best here – only 100 per cent pure cacao is used.
