HOW WE PUT TOGETHER OUR LIST OF 100 HOLIDAYS

-

We have cast the net as wide as we sensibly can but our selection of holidays focuses mainly on European destinations – which are currently the most feasible places to get to in the next few weeks. We do also include some further flung options – in the Caribbean, for example – but while the US and Canada are important and popular destinations in any normal summer, sadly neither country is accepting British tourists at the moment and that situation is highly unlikely to change before September.

We have also had to make a few assumptions and taken a reasonably optimistic approach. For example, we have included Italy among our selections even though travellers currently have to self-isolate for five days on arrival from the UK.

Hopefully, that restriction will be eased for doublevaccinated travellers before too long – but we obviously can’t be sure and you should certainly check the situation before booking. However, even this restriction may not be a problem for people who have booked – for example – two weeks in a villa and are happy to stay by the pool for a few days when they arrive.

Be aware, too, that some of our holidays – such as the rail journeys we have suggested – involve travel to more than one destination, so will be dependent on all relevant countries remaining open to visitors from the UK. And your ability to get insurance to take a cruise holiday will depend on the FCDO removing its advice against taking international cruises. The status of such advice was still uncertain as we went to press.

Overall, we have done our best to check that – if anything does go wrong and new restrictions are imposed by the British Government, or you have to self-isolate and can’t travel – these holidays can be postponed. Please note, though, that terms and conditions for such changes vary between holiday companies and you should be absolutely clear that you are happy with what you are signing up to before you book. Remember, too, that a package holiday which includes flights (or a ferry crossing) along with the accommodation gives you far greater legal protection than booking such arrangements separately.
