LICENCE TO THRILL

-

Although traditionally synonymous with the fly-and-flop beach break, all-inclusives have shifted gear in recent years, trying to appeal to a new generation of experience-hungry holidaymakers with action-packed, every-adventure-included stays. Club Med has long been known for its ski resorts, but all of its villages come with a long list of unusual activities as part of the price, from flying trapeze lessons to learning to sail, plus e-biking, guided hikes and trail running during the summer at its mountain resorts.

On France’s sand-dune-backed west coast, Club Med La Palmyre Atlantique is a hit for keep-them-busy school holidays (65 per cent of all British bookings with the brand are from families). Built between pine forests and the sea, the hotel is the perfect place for children to learn to sail on one of the catamarans (over-sixes only), brush up on their serve with free group tennis lessons, or channel their inner Robin Hood in archery class (03453 676767; clubmed.co.uk, seven nights from £4,214 for a family of four).

For grown-up thrill-seekers, independently owned all-inclusive Ifuru Island added the first skydiving drop zone in the Maldives to its list of things to do when it opened in September. A free skydive (or scuba dive) is currently included with stays of seven nights or more in one of its allsunset-facing rooms (00 960 6582 801; ifuruisland.com, seven nights from £2,984 pp).

Nor is it just active families and adrenaline-hungry couples who are getting in on the action. The fledgling offshoot of honeymoon-centric Constance Hotels, C Resorts is refreshingly up-tempo and playful with its musical jellyfish beach shower and adult-sized swings in Mauritius – as fun with friends as with a partner; rooms can sleep up to three adults. Down on the beach there is everything from floating trampolines and aqua volley to pedalos, plus a kite-surfing festival each summer (June 27 to July 1 next year). Alternatively, head inland on the weekly sociable trek up Le Pouce mountain. A second outpost is in the works for Rodrigez island (00 230 460 1000; c-resorts.com, seven nights from £942pp).
