OLDER TEENS (16-18)

-

At this age, teenagers will be grateful that you are paying – but not necessarily that you insisted on coming along. To win them over, choose something really out of the ordinary. Although the suggestion of camping might be met with eye rolls and resistance, that should change once you introduce them to glamping USA-style. Across the States, companies such as Under Canvas (undercanvas.com) are opening chic sites bordering the country’s incredible national parks, seemingly aimed at a Coachella-loving crowd.

The best brand for teens, says Alan Wilson of Bon Voyage Travel, is AutoCamp, which has seven sites across America’s most dramatically scenic stretches and another two opening soon. Each comes with spa-inspired bathrooms and a clubhouse where guests can meet over food and games.

Music fans will be particularly excited about AutoCamp Hill Country, which opens in mid-2024 about 80 miles west of Austin, Texas. Until then, there is AutoCamp Yosemite, where they can sleep in an Airstream, cabin or tent, chill by the pool and take guided hikes along forested trails. Wilson recommends combining a few nights here with Bon Voyage’s The Best of the West itinerary (0800 316 3012; bon-voyage. co.uk) for the chance to see Los Angeles, San Francisco, Palm Springs and Las Vegas too. From £4,000pp for 16 nights, including flights from the UK.

IN SUMMER

Barcelona is the most popular city in Europe on TikTok, according to research by holiday lettings firm Holidu. The city’s branch of The Hoxton (thehoxton.com) is prime social media fodder, thanks to its chequered rooftop pool surrounded by cool cabanas (rooms from £150).

IN WINTER

Already famously child-friendly, Singapore has recently upped its teen appeal. Go surfing at the just-opened Trifecta ski, snowboard and surf venue and hit the new Barbie-pink beach club, Tipsy Unicorn. A week at Village Hotel at Sentosa with flights from London costs from £1,988pp with Virgin Holidays (0344 472 9646; virginholidays.co.uk).

EASY ESCAPE

On the Kent coast, teenagers traditionally congregate on Deal’s shingle beach on balmier summer nights. Further afield on that stretch of coast, there are surf schools, sea safaris and skate parks, too. New on the books of Deal Holiday Lets (01304 680 318; dealholidaylets.co.uk) for 2024, House on Beaconsfield comes complete with neon signs and Pop Art. It costs from £200 per night for up to six people.
