LES ARCS, FRANCE Best for ski-in/ski-out convenience
With ski-in/ski-out apartments, a crèche, an indoor pool, a sauna, steam room and pedestrianised resort centre, Arc 1950 Le Village has plenty to recommend itself to famlies. Celebrating its 20th anniversary this season, it offers an enhanced entertainment programme too.
Erna Low (020 3011 1222; ernalow.co.uk) offers Arc 1950 Le Village from £529 selfcatering, self-drive.
WHISTLER, CANADA Best for spacious accommodation
Bobsleigh and skeleton may not be top of the grandparents’ list, but Whistler also offers laidback horse-drawn sleigh rides, a choice of spas and a cinema. Creekside is a quiet base of apartments and lodges with spacious living areas and easy access to Whistler mountain. Frontier Ski (020 8776 8709; frontier-ski.co.uk) offers First Tracks Lodge, from £2,283.
GAUSTA, NORWAY Best for saunas and scenery
This resort west of Oslo offers a family-oriented improvers’ area, slopes to suit all abilities and cross-country skiing. Best for a late-season break when temperatures warm up, it offers diversions for non-skiing grandparents such as lakeside saunas and an excursion by train into the Gaustatoppen mountain to learn about Cold War history. Ski Safari (01273 224060; skisafari.com) offers Lake View Cabins, from £985, self-catering.
PRAGELATO SESTRIERE, ITALY Best for all-inclusive ease
Group skiing, snowboarding and snowshoeing lessons, kids’ clubs and lift passes, plus hiking or fitness programmes, are all included in the price of an all-inclusive week at this low-key resort in Piedmont. Club Med (0345 3676767; clubmed.co.uk) offers Club Med Pragelato Sestriere from £1,807, all-inclusive.
ST ANTON, AUSTRIA Best for train travel
Inghams’s rail-based holidays include breaks to St Anton. Departing St Pancras at 8am, trains arrive in this Tyrolean village at around 9pm. Free resort buses, the shops and bars of pedestrianised Dorfstrasse, walking trails, restaurants and bars make it a good option for older family members. Inghams (01483 244263; inghams.co.uk) offers Chalet Rendle from £1,459, including train travel.
Unless stated otherwise, prices are per person, based on a family of six (grandparents, parents, two school-age children), including flights, transfers and half board.
