How do I trace company shares?

The Daily Telegraph - Your Money - - FRONT PAGE -

My mother has left me some shares. I have been unable to trace some of the companies and wonder if there is an easy and simple way to find out what has become of them?

My solicitor has suggested he might help, but I fear the fee might outweigh the benefit. I don’t think the shares are worth very much. I just need to satisfy myself and the other executor about their status. Any suggestions would be welcome. FK, LINCS

Try Companies House (companieshouse.gov. uk or 0303 1234 500). Click on “Find company information” and use the “Beta” or the “WebCheck” service. Among the information accessible will be whether a company is live, any previous names, and if it has been dissolved.
