Warn­ing signs: risky in­vest­ments

Many in­vest­ments are con­sid­ered high risk. Here are three the Money Ad­vice Ser­vice says could be suc­cess­ful, but where in­vestors should take care.

Struc­tured prod­ucts: these could in­clude guar­an­teed eq­uity or cap­i­tal bonds. Some of­fer full pro­tec­tion, many don’t.

Ven­ture cap­i­tal trusts: in­vest­ing in small firms not listed on a ma­jor stock ex­change (see page 4). The com­pa­nies can make a loss or fail en­tirely.

Spread bet­ting: more like bet­ting than in­vest­ing. Bet on whether the value of a share will go up.
