WORK? There are a number of different types of song royalty that investors can buy • Composition rights This refers to the copyright for writing the song • Recording rights This is the copyright of the unique recording of the song. There can be lots of different recordings of a song, known as “covers”, but only one composer of it • Mechanical Royalties are paid any time a song is sold, such as on a CD or an online steam
• Public performance
Royalties are paid when the song is played publicly – including in a restaurant or a live performance • Royalties are paid when a song is used in other media, such as television, adverts or video games. A one-time payment is often negotiated
