Batman film shooter sentenced to life in jail

James Holmes, who shot dead 12 people at a midnight premiere of a Batman film in a Colorado cinema three years ago, was formally sentenced to life in prison without parole yesterday.

Judge Carlos Samour had no other sentencing option after a jury earlier this month did not unanimously agree that Holmes should get the death penalty. Holmes was convicted of firstdegree murder and 140 counts of attempted first-degree murder, as well as an explosives charge, for the attack in Aurora, Colorado in July 2012.
