South Sudan president reluctantly signs deal

-

South Sudan’s president has signed a last-ditch peace deal after sustained international pressure and the threat of United Nations sanctions. Salva Kiir warned he still had “serious reservations” which could derail the deal, aimed at ending a 20-month civil war that has resulted in thousands of deaths. “The current peace we are signing today has so many things we have to reject,” he said at a ceremony in the capital Juba. His objections included the withdrawal of Ugandan troops who have backed his government.
