Air show attractions

-

SIR – In his letter (August 26) about the Shoreham crash, Graham Hoyle asks: “What is the point of air displays?”

Last year, 850,000 people gathered along the seafront at Bournemouth to witness the Vulcan bomber display. There were almost certainly more this year. Surely the enjoyment of so many people justifies the event.

SIR – It is only right that there should be a review of air show safety, but calls for an arbitrary ban on these shows are a knee-jerk overreaction.

Air shows in this country are highly regulated. Will we be banning the Red Arrows or Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, too? It would be sad if future generations were denied the chance to enjoy our aviation heritage.
