Pepi II, 94 years (disputed): According to Egyptian tradition, Pepi II,

below, fifth pharaoh of the sixth dynasty of ancient Egypt, became leader at the age of six in 2278 BC and lived to 100. However, it depends on whether a census was carried out every year or every two years. He is therefore not the official record holder.

Sobhuza II, 82 years, 254 days: Paramount Chief and later King of Swaziland and official record holder. His father died dancing in 1899, leaving Sobhuza leader at four months old. He reigned until his death in 1982.

Louis XIV, 72 years, 110 days: The Sun King,

below, ruled France from 1643 until his death in 1715, making him the longestrei­gning monarch of any major European country.

Johann II, 70 years, 90 days: The former Prince of Liechtenst­ein is second only to Louis XIV on the list of European monarchs who ruled countries, not just states or principali­ties. His reign began in 1858, when 18, and ended with his death in 1929. And the shortest reigns ...

Lady Jane Grey, 13 days: Lady Jane, above right, was nominated Queen by her cousin Edward VI, in July 1553, but deposed by Mary, daughter of Henry VIII.

King Luís Filipe, Prince Royal of Portugal, 20 mins: King Carlos I and his heir were both killed in the Lisbon Regicide on Feb 1, 1910. However, the king died instantly while the prince – now king – struggled with mortal wounds for about 20 minutes.

King Louis XIX, 20 mins: Prince LouisAntoi­ne, Duke of Angouleme, succeeded to the French throne in August 1830 but immediatel­y abdicated in favour of his nephew, Henri V.
