Ban for GP who lied to beat 11 speeding fines

-

A DOCTOR who evaded speeding fines 11 times in a row by falsely claiming someone different was driving her car each time has been banned for a year.

Dr Iziegbuwa Omoregie, 33, was at the wheel of a Peugeot 307 registered to her husband, Allison Omoruyi, 39, when she triggered speed traps nine times in eight months.

After swapping the car for a Nissan Qashqai, the GP was then caught twice more by traffic cameras.

But every time a notice of intention to prosecute was sent, it was returned completed with the false names and addresses of people from foreign countries who the pair claimed were driving on each occasion.

The couple were arrested but stuck to their story until a police investiga- tion established that in every instance it was Dr Omoregie who was behind the wheel at the time the speeding offences were committed.

The husband and wife, formerly of Wigan but now living in Woodley, Stockport, both pleaded guilty at Manchester Crown Court yesterday to conspiracy to pervert the course of justice by supplying false information to avoid the speeding penalties.

They were both sentenced to three months in prison, suspended for 12 months, each told to perform 80 hours’ unpaid work and were fined £1,500 each. Dr Omoregie, who qualified as a doctor at the University of Benin in 2006, was also banned from driving for 12 months.

Pc Steve Oliver, from Greater Manchester Police, said: “Both Dr Iziegbuwa Omoregie and Mr Allison Omoruyi not only flagrantly flouted the driving laws, but actively attempted to mislead police.

“They were quite happy to waste police time and have shown a complete disregard for the law with their actions.

“They have both now paid the price for their disrespect for the driving laws, sustaining damage to their reputations, a total of £3,000 [fines] between them and 160 hours of working in the community.

“I hope this makes a strong point that no matter what your standing in society, no one is above the law and you will eventually be held to account for what you have done.”
