Sunday trading costs

-

SIR – You report (October 22) that David Cameron has delayed a vote on extending Sunday trading hours in order to allow ministers more time to win support. In other words, he knows that if he took a vote today the Bill would be defeated.

Britain is the only country in the European Union which trades on 51 Sundays a year. Paris only allows six Sundays a year, and these are very strictly limited to certain streets in Paris.

The managing director of John Lewis, the department store, has spoken out against extra trading hours. My company, and many others, agree with him. Consumers don’t have any more money to spend, so extra hours would just take turnover out of other days in the week.

Why does Mr Cameron not listen to the Church, shop workers and businesses that oppose longer Sunday trading hours? Graham D Parkin Managing Director, Johnsons Shoes Company Lewes, East Sussex
