PM owes voters a TV debate, says Fox

THE Prime Minister owes it to the public to join a debate on Britain’s membership of the EU because it is such a “momentous” decision, a former Cabinet minister has said.

Liam Fox, the former Tory defence secretary, urged David Cameron to set out why his deal would mean that he would volunteer to join the EU today.

Mr Cameron is under increasing pressure to deliver on his promise to agree to a televised debate ahead of the referendum.

Dr Fox said: “It is a momentous decision for the country and the public need to hear the arguments in detail and the consequences their votes will have. The Prime Minister says that he would join the EU on these terms even if we weren’t already a member – I am sure the public would love to hear his explanation. I am sure the debates will take place – whether or not the Prime Minister agrees to them; this issue is more important than any one politician.”

The Daily Telegraph, YouTube and Buzzfeed are offering to co-host a debate on the issues in the lead-up to the EU referendum.

Katie Ghose, chief executive of the Electoral Reform Society, said voters now expected politicians to debate issues publicly ahead of nationally important elections.

Mr Cameron has previously said that he would consider taking part in televised debates ahead of the referendum.
