Lightning strikes within the volcanic plume of Japan’s erupting Mount Sakurajima. The weather phenomenon is caused by rock fragments and ash colliding to produce static charges. The volcano, which is about 30 miles from a nuclear plant in Kagoshima prefecture, south-west Japan, erupted yesterday, sending fountains of lava into the sky.
