Filling in the gap

SIR – Phil Sayer, who advised London Underground passengers to “mind the gap”, has died (Obituaries, April 18).

I believe the original “mind the gap” announcement was recorded by Peter Lodge, a sound mixer, at Sound Associates in Bayswater, in 1968.

The actor cast to record this phrase failed to turn up, and so Peter read the message himself in one take. This recording was used for many years. Bryan Oates London SW18
