EU wants to let in thousands on new permits
Brussels officials plan to tackle the refugee crisis by inviting tens of thousands of migrants to Europe under a revamped work permit scheme.
EU officials say the “Blue Card”, based on the US Green Card, will stop smuggling gangs by giving migrants a legal route to Europe. It will also help the economy as the continent’s population ages.
Migrants will be able to come to Europe if they have a job offer lasting six months. After a year, they may move to another EU state. Britain is exempt from the scheme.
