Danish gallery removes references to ‘Negroes’
The National Gallery of Denmark has replaced the word “Negro” with “African” in titles and descriptions of artworks in an effort to remove colonial terminology from its collection.
Peter Noergaard Larsen, the gallery’s deputy director, said the language change affected 14 works by Danish painters from 1609 to 1959.
He said the museum in Copenhagen had been inspired by a similar move last year by the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
