Betrayal tells the story of a love triangle between Emma, her husband Robert and Jerry, Robert’s close friend. It unfolds in reverse, opening in 1977 when Emma and Jerry meet two years after the end of the affair, and plots Emma’s growing betrayal in reverse chronology, charting it back to 1968. The play received rave reviews and an Olivier for best new play in 1978, and has been revived numerous times since.
