SIR – You report (March 24) that Melissa Hemsley, the so-called food guru, has discovered the benefits of sauerkraut.

Sixty years ago, my German Oma would solemnly intone “Sauer

macht gesund” (“Sour makes you happy”) as she tried to coax a mouthful of the stuff between my clenched teeth. I still hate it. We hen-keepers are buying them fresh every day to provide muchneeded greenery for our flocks, which have been under house arrest since last November due to the avian flu threat. Mine favour “sweetheart”.
