Ebola deception medic awaits tribunal ruling
A doctor who admitted misleading other medics over Ebola nurse Pauline Cafferkey acted dishonestly, medical watchdogs have ruled. Dr Hannah Ryan took the temperature of Ms Cafferkey as they waited to go through Ebola screening at Heathrow Airport in December 2014, the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service heard.
The nurse’s temperature was 38.2C – a warning sign – but instead of raising the alarm Dr Ryan recorded a lower temperature and Ms Cafferkey was allowed to go home to Scotland. She fell ill with Ebola the next day.
The three-person panel ruled that Dr Ryan “implicitly agreed” to the deception. They will consider her continued fitness to practice today.
