Useless broadband
SIR – Your report (March 27) on the slow broadband connection (2 Mbps) in the Welsh village of Abererch makes a strong case for better broadband connectivity in rural areas.
However, this problem is not confined to rural areas: parts of Rotherhithe in London experience similar speeds (1-3 Mbps), and BT has no plans to upgrade facilities in the foreseeable future. While I can understand that rural areas present a challenge – both in terms of distance and economies of scale – there can be no similar excuse in London.
Those of us with poor broadband pay the same charges as those with fast broadband, so there is no financial incentive for BT to improve its infrastructure. Legislation removing charges for those with poor service would provide such an incentive. Dr Richard Shuttlewood London SE16
SIR – The people of Abererch are lucky to have a broadband speed of 2 Mbps. In this village (which is only 2.5 miles from an exchange) the average speed is 1.7 Mbps.
Currently BT Openreach has no plans to improve this. Dr Robert Walker Great Clifton, Cumbria
