Royal Parks run greener than ever

- Samantha Herbert

THE 10th annual Royal Parks Foundation half marathon is to lead the way in “green races”, its organisers claim, with 66 per cent of the waste generated by more than 16,000 runners being recycled.

The run, on Sunday Oct 8, is staged over a 13.1-mile route which takes in the capital’s landmarks and the Royal Parks.

It will pass through Hyde Park, Green Park, St James’s Park and Kensington Gardens.

Apart from waste measures, the winner’s trophy and race medals will be made from certified sustainable wood and race lanyards have been designed for re-use as key rings. Rather than goody bags, competitors will be handed a bottle of water and a banana.

No leafleting will be allowed, and all discarded running wear will be collected and donated to Clothes Aid.
