‘Clean” is now officially a dirty word when it comes to food, with reports that following a crackpot dairy-free diet can weaken your bones. Yay! Pass the Gruyere. And the double cream. No need for a grater, thanks; I’ll just dunk and suck.

According to the National Osteoporos­is Society, the “cult” of cutting out major food groups at the behest of celebrity cooks and cleaneatin­g gurus is creating a “ticking timebomb” among young people whose bone growth and long-term health could be seriously affected. Fads for removing gluten, grains, refined sugars and dairy are having a significan­t impact, says the charity, whose research shows that four in 10 between the ages of 18 and 24 have tried such exclusion diets.
