Shoddy roads

SIR – I have recently returned from motoring on the Continent, and am once again becoming aware of the poor standard of roads here.

Potholes and litter were virtually absent from the roads abroad, yet here they are a regular feature. Given that British motorists are paying some of the highest fuel prices – and therefore fuel taxes – in Europe, shouldn’t we expect to see far better roads for our money? Allan Dowson
