Go north for a tan – Scotland will be hotter than England

- By Rozina Sabur

SCOTLAND is expected to be hotter than England over the Bank Holiday, as forecasters predicted temperatures to reach the high seventies Fahrenheit.

Grahame Madge, a spokesman for the Met Office, said: “We’re expecting the higher temperatures over the next day or so to be in Scotland rather than England because of the air flow into the UK coming from the south-east.”

The warmest place could be Aviemore in Scotland at 80F (27C).

Parts of Wales and the South West of England will struggle to reach those levels. Camborne is expected to see temperatures of around 65 F (18C).

The South can expect morning showers but a brighter afternoon.

However, it is not all good news for the long weekend as the hot weather will also bring in thundery outbreaks that may disrupt travel.

The Met Office has issued warnings for persistent and heavy rain in the afternoon and evening for all of Northern Ireland, most of Scotland and parts of northern England and Wales between 1pm and 3am on Sunday morning, and also warned of torrential thundery outbreaks and localised flooding in the South for the 24 hours from noon tomorrow.

♦ Some airline passengers embarking on an overseas bank holiday getaway were forced to travel without their luggage due to a baggage system problem at Gatwick Airport. Travellers faced long queues as they arrived at the West Sussex airport yesterday.
