Film choice
Ever After: A Cinderella Story (1998) FILM4, 6.40PM ★★
This proves an underwhelming vehicle for Drew Barrymore, who initially seems the perfect fit for the role of Danielle De Barbarac, the orphan forced into servitude by her wicked stepmother (Anjelica Huston). It is a fairy tale with a feminist spin; its heroine is strong and smart and her fairy godmother is Leonardo da Vinci. Alas, the dull Dougray Scott is handsome snob Prince Charming.
Jaws (1975) ITV4, 9.00PM ★★★★★
Who would have thought that the alternating pattern of two musical notes would haunt cinemagoers (and swimmers) for decades to come? With its suspenseful score, Steven Spielberg’s creepy shark film remains one of the most revered blockbusters in history. Roy Scheider is superb as police chief Martin Brody trying to kill a great white which is terrorising an East Coast community and its holidaymakers.
Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011) FILM4, 10.40PM ★★★
British director Rupert Wyatt, making a confident leap into the big-time after his nifty 2008 debut The Escapist, fashions much of this prequel movie as a simian prison flick. It’s grand entertainment as intelligent ape Caesar (a subtle mo-cap performance by Andy Serkis) is imprisoned in a sanctuary and begins to question nature’s hierarchy. War for the Planet of the Apes is in cinemas now.
