One vote per person
SIR – When I served in Northern Ireland in a previous career, one heard the phrase “Vote early; vote often”. This concerned us greatly because it led to a continuation of the divide between different parts of the community.
Our proposed solution to this would work well across the whole of the United Kingdom. All adults of voting age have an individual National Insurance number allocated to them. Use of this number should be obligatory and all local voting registers should compare lists nationally to check for duplication. Mark Jackson

SIR – If we are to have fair elections then it is essential that voters prove their identity before casting their vote.
The postal voting system is also wide open to abuse. It should be restricted to exceptional cases. Geoffrey Wyartt
