The ‘fresh start’ MPS who could succeed Theresa May

-

Jacob Reesmogg, 48 Entered Parliament: 2010 Ladbrokes odds: 10/1

Jacob Reesmogg’s profile is stratospheric. He was recently tipped by The Spectator as a possible PM. Married with six children, he has made no secret of his ambition to be the Speaker. MPS have noted he has started to boost his social media profile. But one MP said he belonged to an 1850s party.

Priti Patel, 45 Entered Parliament: 2010 Ladbrokes odds: 33/1

The only Cabinet minister on our list, Patel is a political street fighter and ardent Brexiteer who has been around the party for 20 years. Daughter of Ugandan immigrants, Patel would appeal to the working class and ethnic minorities but concerns remain about her more populist Rightwing policies.

Tom Tugendhat, 44 Entered Parliament: 2015 Ladbrokes odds: 33/1

Tom Tugendhat, son of a High Court judge, finally landed a plum role from which to launch a tilt at the leadership as chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee. Married with two children, he served in the Armed Forces in Iraq and Afghanistan. Ministers say he is “extremely able but needs to calm it a bit”.

Jesse Norman, 55 Entered Parliament: 2010 Ladbrokes odds: 50/1

Having chaired the Culture, Media and Sport committee, Jesse Norman is now a junior transport minister. Married with three children, he has written several books but may find his privileged background a problem. He studied at Eton and Oxford and is married to the daughter of a former Lord Chief Justice.

Rory Stewart, 44 Entered Parliament: 2010 Ladbrokes odds: 50/1

Few can match Rory Stewart’s back story – during a career in the diplomatic service, he walked 6,000 miles across Afghanistan, India and Iran. A former tutor to the Duke of Cambridge and Prince Harry, Mr Stewart, who is married, is junior minister in the Department for International Development.

Seema Kennedy, 43 Entered Parliament: 2015 Ladbrokes odds: 80/1

A mother of three, Seema Kennedy – born in Lancashire to an Iranian father – is a lawyer who has just become a Parliamentary aide to Mrs May. Kennedy, the South Ribble MP whose majority increased at the election, worked with Jo Cox, the late Labour MP, on a cross-party loneliness commission. She speaks French and Farsi.

Victoria Atkins, 41 Entered Parliament: 2015 Ladbrokes odds: 100/1

Daughter of Sir Robert Atkins, a former Tory MP, Victoria Atkins has been a PPS in the Home Office and now to the Leader of the Lords. A barrister who specialises in prosecuting serious organised crime, she is married with a child. Ministers say she is a “feisty, articulate and funny” One Nation Tory.

Tobias Ellwood, 50 Entered Parliament: 2005 Ladbrokes odds: 100/1

Now a defence minister, his reputation was enhanced when he tried to save the life of Pc Keith Palmer after he was stabbed at Parliament’s gates. Ellwood, who is married to Hannah, is “someone you want in the room but not as leader”, said a senior colleague. Christopher Hope and Lucy Cherry
