Australia reneging on refugee deal, says UN
Australia is reneging on a deal to take in refugees, says the United Nations.
The UN said an agreement was made in November to relocate “boat people” to the US on the basis that Canberra would accept those with links to Australia. But those trying to enter without a visa are still being sent to detention facilities in New Guinea.
A spokesman for the Australian government said: “Those transferred to regional processing centres will not settle here. This has long been the case.”
