Trump’s downfall
SIR – With the US Congress under the control of the Republicans, it is widely assumed that, whatever horrors the Department of Justice special counsel Robert Mueller and the FBI may dig up about President Trump and his team, it will be impossible to remove him from office. I am not so sure.
The President’s recent attack on Jeff Sessions – the US Attorney General and an admirable public servant – and his talk of granting pardons not only to his family and campaign team but even to himself are but the latest in a string of calamitous errors.
Those Republicans in Congress who face re-election contests in 2018 and 2020 must be worried. I suspect many would feel more secure with President Mike Pence. We should therefore not be surprised when articles of impeachment are brought before Congress (it will be when, not if) and Republicans abstain in sufficient numbers to bring Mr Trump down.
