Film choice
Antz (1998) FILM4, 3.15PM ★★★★
Neurotic ant Z (voiced perfectly by Woody Allen) tries to bypass his totalitarian society’s caste system and win the affections of the beautiful but spoiled Princess Bala (Sharon Stone) in this superb animation, the first from Dreamworks Pictures. With an excellent supporting cast (including Sylvester Stallone, Christopher Walken and Anne Bancroft), it’s a mixture of wry satire and familyfriendly fun.
All Is Lost (2013) FILM4, 9.00PM ★★★★
Robert Redford speaks barely a handful of lines, but this film still manages to feel like an internal monologue . Redford’s unnamed character is sailing solo in the Indian Ocean when he wakes up on his 39-foot yacht to find that the hull has been perforated by a stray shipping container, and his communication equipment is wrecked. A defiantly unsentimental film, and perhaps also his finest.
Thelma & Louise (1991) SONY MOVIE CHANNEL, 10.00PM ★★★★★
Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon star as the school friends who go on a road trip in this Oscar-winning buddy film. Thelma (Davis) is the dowdy housewife, Louise (Sarandon) the naive free spirit, but the real driving force is the director, Ridley Scott, who gives the characters freedom while winding them into a taut, tragic plot. Look out for a young Brad Pitt whose career was launched by his role as hunky drifter JD.
