It’s always worth investing in a good handbag for the office – or maybe two

-

QI’m looking for a new work handbag. I don’t mind investing, but want to be sure it won’t go out of style.

ASo often, I see working women carrying battered handbags, like old friends they can’t bear to be parted with. But why make an effort to dress smartly and then not bother with your handbag?

I admit that I might be biased after working for Anya Hindmarch in the early part of my career, but

I think a well-made handbag will really last if it’s looked after properly and saved for work. Hindmarch’s Bathurst bag – an update on Margaret Thatcher’s favourite top-handle shape – is proof; I wear mine with skirts and dresses year after year, which should stop the price from smarting quite so much. Since longevity matters, stick to the classics. You don’t need the latest IT bag for work. What you do need are a few chic yet practical bags that get you from home to office – maybe via an interview or presentation. My solution to fitting everything in is to carry two bags. I have alarger one, that I leave at my desk, for carrying a pair of heels, my ipad, and notebooks to and from the office. Then I’ll rely on a smaller bag for my diary, wallet, lipsalve and phone, which comes with me to meetings and on the lunch run. Look for as minimal branding and logos as possible. Navy or black is the obvious choice, but neutral tan and grey also go with pretty much everything. I love burgundy, as it’s a bit more unusual but classic enough for the office.

While I am quick to recommend high street in many cases, when it comes to handbags go for the best you can afford. Wait for sales or go to designer outlets such as Bicester Village.

If you’re on a budget, prioritise the quality of the smaller bag as you’re likely to put the larger one on the ground, exposed to commuter feet.

Zara and Russell & Bromley both have large tote options that don’t cost the earth. The Cambridge Satchel Company makes all of its bags in the UK (tick), has endless colour options (tick) and great prices (triple tick). Smythson may be more famous for stationery, but their East West Panama tote is my dream commuting bag, with long shoulder straps and a zip to keep all the contents safe.
