Ban acid sales to teens, says attack victim
A young woman attacked with acid by a classmate has called for a ban on teenagers buying the chemicals.
Molly Young, 18, had her viola case filled with drain cleaner, containing sulphuric acid, by a fellow pupil after she began dating her ex-boyfriend. She was 17 at the time of the attack.
She described the excruciating pain as being “like having a blowtorch held to your leg”. She added: “It is a weapon. If you are buying it online, why can’t there be a little red flag or something that comes up just to say ‘do you have a licence’ or something?
“Why would a 17-year-old girl, for example, need to buy a bottle of acid, or drain cleaner?”
Her attacker Emily Bowen, 18, is serving a 21-month sentence.
