Indian rubbish mountain collapse leaves two dead
At least two people were killed when part of a huge mountain of rubbish crashed down in a landfill site on the eastern outskirts of New Delhi, the Indian capital, on Friday.
Omvir Singh, a police officer, said the falling rubbish pushed several vehicles into a nearby canal in the Ghazipur area. Five people were rescued and two died. Heavy rains are believed to have caused the collapse.
About 2,800 tonnes of rubbish from east Delhi – home to four million of the capital’s 21million residents – are dumped at the site every day.
