The street that Betjeman thought ‘perfection’

-

sir – As someone who spent nearly 16 happy and fulfilling years living and working in Newcastle upon Tyne, I am not the most objective person to extol the virtues of Grey Street as one of the finest streets in England (Letters, August 30), but it would surely win any prize on offer and has indeed won a few.

I am not alone in this view. Sir John Betjeman described it as “perfection ... not even Regent Street, even old Regent Street, London, can compare with that descending, subtle curve.” Sir Nikolaus Pevsner, prince of architectural commentators, rated it “one of the finest streets in England.”

Who can say more?

His Honour David Hodson Middlewich, Cheshire

sir – I lived in Broad Street, Oxford, as an undergraduate at Trinity College in 1979. It was the best street.

I now live in Herbert Street, Cambridge. It is the best street.

Does time change one’s perception of the best street? Helena Browne
