Moonrise Kingdom (2012) FILM4, 7.10PM ★★★★

Wes Anderson’s fey romance centres on two lovestruck 12-year-olds (Jared Gilman and Kara Hayward) in 1965 whose elopement sends their sleepy New England community into a spin – as does the subsequent searchand-rescue operation involving Suzy’s parents (Frances Mcdormand and Bill Murray). The love is touching, and the film’s visuals and supporting cast, including Tilda Swinton and Bruce Willis, are wonderful.

Diamonds Are Forever (1971) ITV4, 9.00PM ★★★★

Sean Connery’s final outing as 007 has all the ingredients of a classic Bond caper: impossibly creepy henchmen, a criminal mastermind and gadgets galore. Bond discovers business tycoon and archnemesis Blofeld (Charles Gray) is behind a massive diamond smuggling operation. It later transpires that the profits are being used to build a giant laser to destroy Washington DC.

Backdraft (1991) TCM, 9.00PM ★★★

Ron Howard’s Oscar-nominated thriller with a script by a former fireman is rather good. A strong cast helps: Kurt Russell and William Baldwin play hot-headed firefighting brothers from Chicago, while Robert De Niro’s investigator suspects various blazes known as “backdrafts” are the result of arson. Is Russell’s macho hero involved? Or is Donald Sutherland’s pyromaniac to blame?
